At many organisations, planning and budgeting take too long and devour resources. Finance teams spend too much time on administrative tasks relating to these processes—collecting, consolidating and reconciling data, for example—and are left with little time for analysis, strategy development and target setting. Accuracycan be patchy, results unreliable.

Safeguarding your data is more important than ever. In today’s data-driven business landscape, companies are using their data to innovate, inform product improvements, and personalize services for their customers. The sheer volume of data collected for these purposes keeps growing, but the solutions available to organizations for processing and analyzing it become more efficient and intuitive every day. Reaching the right customers at the right time with the right offers has never been easier. With this newfound agility, however, comes new opportunities for vulnerability. With so much riding on the integrity of your data and the services that make it secure and available, it’s crucial to have a plan in place for unexpected events that can wipe out your physical IT environment or otherwise compromise data access. The potential for natural disasters, malicious software attacks, and other unforeseen events necessitates that companies implement a robust disaster recovery (DR) strategy to

Because terrorists and other criminals are already using technology to carry out their missions, intelligence professionals need to access all available, appropriate information, to extract important elements and process, analyze and disseminate it quickly to keep ahead of potential threats. The scale, complexity and changing nature of intelligence data can make it impossible to stay in front without the aid of technology to collect, process and analyze big data. This paper describes a solution for how this information can be quickly and safely shared with access based on a user's organizational responsibilities and need to know.

There’s no getting around it. Passed in May 2016, the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the minimum standards of the Data Protection Directive, a 21-year-old system that allowed the 28 EU member states to set their own data privacy and security rules relating to the information of EU subjects. Under the earlier directive, the force and power of the laws varied across the continent. Not so after GDPR went into effect May 25, 2018. Under GDPR, organizations are subject to new, uniform data protection requirements—or could potentially face hefty fines. So what factors played into GDPR’s passage? • Changes in users and data. The number, types and actions of users are constantly increasing. The same is true with data. The types and amount of information organizations collect and store is skyrocketing. Critical information should be protected, but often it’s unknown where the data resides, who can access it, when they can access it or what happens once

Today’s brick and mortar retailers must tackle myriad challenges in an era of industry transformation, increased customer expectations and a highly-competitive landscape. The vast majority are facing these hurdles head-on, with particularly dogged efforts toward reaching omnichannel excellence: For example, according to Zebra Technologies’ 2017 Retail Vision Study, 90% of retailers plan to have an omnichannel practice in place by 2021, through options such as Buy Online, Pick Up in Store (BOPIS) or Click & Collect. It has become clear, however, that for these omnichannel efforts to succeed, inventory visibility and accuracy (ideally 90% or more, according to the Retail Vision Study) is more important than ever — to provide consumers with the easiest path to purchase and retailers with the most efficient way to fulfill. Accurate inventory is the foundation upon which all the other pillars of retail can be built, so retailers can react quickly and make smart decisions about their busines

Labeling blood and other samples at the time they are collected improves patient safety and helps prevent a host of problems related to misidentification — including many of the estimated 160,900 adverse events that occur in U.S. hospitals annually because of sample identification errors.1 There is a strong and growing body of evidence within medical literature that creating specimen identification labels on demand at the patient bedside with a mobile printer can significantly reduce errors. The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) for 2010 advocate the use of two patient-specific identifiers, such as name and birthdate, whenever taking blood or other samples from a patient, and to label the sample collection container in the presence of the patient. Producing specimen labels at the patient bedside and encoding patient identification in a barcode satisfies both The Joint Commission’s NPSG and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. The Internet of Things (IoT) didn’t just connect everything everywhere; It laid the groundwork for the next industrial revolution. Connected devices sending data was only one achievement of the IoT—but one that helped solve the problem of data spread across countless silos that was not collected because it was too voluminous and/or too expensive to analyze. Now, with advances in cloud computing and analytics, cheaper and more scalable factory solutions are available. This, in combination with the cost and size of sensors continuously being reduced, supplies the other achievement: the possibility for every organization to digitally transform. Using a Smart Factory system, all relevant data is aggregated, analyzed, and acted upon. Sensors, devices, people, and processes are part of a connected ecosystem providing: • Reduced downtime • Minimized surplus and defects • Deep insights • End-to-end real-time visibility

Welcome to the very first edition of Modern Monitoring, a collection of articles and insights designed to help IT operations and DevOps professionals deliver more resilient, supportable and high-performance IT services. It’s perhaps a sign of the times that monitoring as a discipline is receiving much more attention within the biz tech community. And deservedly so. The new distributed application architectures being built, together with the dizzying pace of software delivery, demand new approaches in what’s traditionally been perceived as a “keeping the lights on” IT practice. Of course, there’s no better way to consider monitoring than to draw parallels with other practices in related fields. It’s why we’ve included a couple of pieces with a distinct aeronautical flavor that discuss importance of instrumentation and contextual awareness.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) represents a paradigm shift in the way companies across the globe must approach protecting personal data. As of May 2018, EU data subjects now have greater autonomy than ever before over how their personal information is collected, stored and shared – and the repercussions for companies that fail to comply will be significant. At the heart of the matter lies Data Security and Protection. Protect the personal data, and you are well on your way to tackling many of the challenges the GDPR presents. But this is no easy task – before you protect your data, you must understand it, and even once you’ve achieved these goals, continually re-evaluate your data privacy and protection posture to adapt to changes in this dynamic environment.
