DigitalOcean commissioned Cloud Spectator to evaluate the performance of virtual machines (VMs) from three different Cloud Service Providers (CSPs): Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean. Cloud Spectator tested the various VMs to evaluate the CPU performance, Random Access Memory (RAM) and storage read and write performance of each provider’s VMs. The purpose of the study was to understand Cloud service performance among major Cloud providers with similarly-sized VMs using a standardized, repeatable testing methodology. Based on the analysis, DigitalOcean’s VM performance was superior in nearly all measured VM performance dimensions, and DigitalOcean provides some of the most compelling performance per dollar available in the industry.

Modern storage arrays can’t compete on price without a range of data reduction technologies that help reduce the overall total cost of ownership of external storage. Unfortunately, there is no one single data reduction technology that fits all data types and we see savings being made with both data deduplication and compression, depending on the workload. Typically, OLTP-type data (databases) work well with compression and can achieve between 2:1 and 3:1 reduction, depending on the data itself. Deduplication works well with large volumes of repeated data like virtual machines or virtual desktops, where many instances or images are based off a similar “gold” master.

A user initiates the call and selects the source language, such as Spanish. (In this example, assume that the target language is set to English.) As the user is talking to the support representative, the audio is converted to text using the Speech to Text service. Then using Language Translator, the text is translated to English. English language text is then sent to the Text to Speech service as input. The output audio message is what the support representative hears. All of this happens in near real time. The text from Speech to Text and the Language Translator service also can be stored in a database for analytics. The same process is repeated in reverse for the audio message sent by support personnel.

There are obviously a variety of choices open to you: a spreadsheet plug-in may be appropriate if you are only focused on general ledger reporting and do not have concerns over security or compliance. You might also suppose that this is a low-cost option, though we would argue that the remediation required, the additional audit fees and the lack of repeatability means that this is a false economy and that this approach will end up costing you more in the long term. A second use case would be where you already have a financial reporting solution installed, when the add-on facilities for purposes such as business intelligence are likely to be your major focus. In this case an Oracle based solution is likely to be as good as anything else.

Dell EMC provides VMware vSAN Ready Nodes that combine a wide range of Dell hardware and VMware vSAN software into a ready-to-order package. These include the new single-socket Dell EMC PowerEdge R7415 servers powered by the AMD EPYC 7000-series processors. These Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes are validated and configured to meet hyper-converged workload needs while taking advantage of lower single-socket licensing costs from VMware. Dell commissioned Demartek to evaluate the performance of the new Dell EMC PowerEdge R7415 servers that use the AMD EPYC 7000-series of processors. Mixed enterprise workloads were run in this VMware vSAN cluster using one model of the AMD EPYC processor in each of three identical nodes. Then the tests were repeated using different models of AMD EPYC processors in the vSAN cluster nodes.
