The broad adoption of the next generation of cloud, mobile, M2M, and big data applications is having profound impacts on IT and network infrastructures. Compared to traditional applications, these applications have much shorter life cycles. You must be able to spin them up, spin them down, and grow and shrink them on demand. Furthermore, you must be able to move these application workloads within a data center or across geographically distributed data centers, resulting in increased management complexities.

Across industry sectors, the boundaries of the traditional enterprise are blurring, as organizations open up their on-premise data and application functionality to partner organizations, the Web, mobile apps, smart devices and the cloud. APIs (application programming interfaces) form the foundation of this new open enterprise, allowing enterprises to reuse their existing information assets across organizational boundaries.

The mobile app has become “the” strategic initiative for all digital organizations attempting to drive business forward. “By 2017, mobile apps will be downloaded more than 268 billion times, generating revenue of more than $77 billion — making apps one of the most popular computing tools for users across the globe.”1 The app has become more than a simple method of communication. It is the new critical point of engagement, the face of the organization, and quite possibly the difference maker in customers staying or leaving. Getting the “user experience” (or UX) right in the eyes of the consumer is no longer a nice to have but fundamental to achieving success.

The application economy has forced businesses to transform. To capture new growth opportunities, enterprises are opening up and sharing select data and applications with developers, partners, mobile devices, the cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the byproducts of this transformation is the discovery that legacy data has value in the application economy—so much so that new revenue opportunities emerge as this data is used in new ways.

While some are still adjusting to the idea, you’re well aware that we’re living in an application economy. For the uninformed, an application economy is where everything is driven by a connected, mobile, application-based world where your customers are far more likely to experience your brand and interact with your enterprise through a software application than a live person. But, beyond the benefits, each day you’re feeling the pressure it exerts on your budget, resources and network. You’ve seen this wave swell on the horizon, and now it’s arrived: executives are enthusiastic and asking about strategies, and line-of-business leaders are requesting faster dev times and more complex projects. Staking out your place as a leader in this new landscape will require you to develop and deliver high-impact applications faster than ever before.

The rise of the application programming interface (API) represents a business opportunity and a technical challenge. For business leaders, APIs present the opportunity to open new revenue streams and maximize customer value. But enterprise architects are the ones charged with creating the APIs that make backend systems available for reuse in new Web and mobile apps.

Traditional identity-based security models cannot secure your business data from the latest mobile-cloud threats, including unsecured devices, unmanaged apps, and unsanctioned cloud services. To keep business data secure in the mobile-cloud world, you need a new security model that checks the state and health of devices, apps, and cloud services before letting them get to your data.

As security threats increase and government regulations require more control over users and data, it is important for organizations to evolve their security measures. As enterprises rapidly expand their footprints into cloud, mobile and social, they must ensure that the right users have the right access to sensitive data and applications. Strong as well as optimized identities are becoming increasingly important as insider threat and tightened regulations become more prevalent.

The time has come for enterprise risk management to change. Mobile devices have become core to our personal and professional lives, yet most enterprises remain focused on traditional PC endpoints. Although many of the same elements of risk that affect PCs also apply to mobile endpoints, simply extending current PC security controls to your mobile feet is ineffective.

Most people define mobile devices – smartphones and tablets – as those running a mobile-optimized operating system (e.g. iOS, Android, Windows Phone). There’s a trend emerging, however, in which traditional mobile devices are gaining functionality typically associated with PCs. At the same time, PCs are being architected more like mobile devices — an interbreeding of species, if you will. The iPad Pro, for example, has a keyboard. With Windows 10, phones and tablets can run “Universal” apps that also run on PCs. Windows 10 also has application-layer sandboxing, code-signing, and an app store with apps pre-vetted by Microsoft. In certain configurations (i.e. enterprise-managed devices), a laptop running Windows 10 has a security architecture that looks strikingly similar to a smartphone or tablet.

This report examines enterprise security threats for iOS and Android. While Android has higher consumer market share, iOS commands more market share in the enterprise, accounting for 72% of enterprise mobile activations in Q1 2015 compared to Android’s 26% activation share1 . The perception that iOS is more secure has helped drive its enterprise adoption, but this perception comes largely from security trends observed in the consumer space. Android, with a more open mobile platform and 81% global market share2 , predictably invites more broad-based attacks than iOS. When it comes to iOS and Android in the enterprise, however, both need threat protection because at a fundamental level both platforms are subject to similar vulnerabilities and attack methods. iOS attacks may be relatively uncommon today, but they have happened and can occur. Moreover, enterprises increasingly rely on iOS app-distribution methods that forgo Apple’s app-review and they face the risk that attackers will cont

The act of engaging with a customer or buyer is hardly a new concept. Nor is the inherent need to do so in order to achieve success. Companies initially had control of the relationship because they controlled the information. When consumers received the advantage of online access, they took the lead. But the terms of engagement have changed again. Because of the mobile app, the power has shifted back to the marketing department.
