Effective security for cloud-hosted web applications requires full visibility into the environment in which the apps live and the potential exposure to vulnerabilities — and to do so consistently, while proactively monitoring for attacks without causing delays in application development and delivery. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. Similarly, relying on your cloud service provider’s security services is insufficient; any provider will tell you that securing the cloud environment is a shared responsibility between cloud service provider and customer, and the responsibility for specifically securing web applications is the sole responsibility of the customer. And although the industry as a whole has become better at protecting lower-level network and server resources, as attackers look for targets, they are moving up the application stack.

As cybercriminals look for new ways to break through defenses, it’s vital that organizations have access to real-time operational intelligence across their applications, services, and security infrastructure. As Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) migrated applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS), it needed to expand security capacity for edge protection of its AWS VPCs. REI chose Splunk for security monitoring, historical analysis, and data visualization in real time, to help it investigate events and mitigate operational risks.

Traditional performance management solutions were built for applications owned by the enterprise and run inside the corporate network. The explosive adoption of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud applications have brought new performance management challenges that push the limits of the enterprise infrastructure and break these traditional approaches. In this white paper, we examine why existing solutions don’t work for the modern enterprise and discuss a fundamentally different approach that is needed to address the new challenges. The business intelligence (BI) “boom” of the 1990s was something BIG: big projects designed to give big companies with big budgets a competitive advantage. And while BI delivered big returns for some companies, for others it was nothing but a big headache. An estimated 50% of all data warehousing projects failed to meet their goals. Why? Because many companies underestimated just how big an undertaking BI really was.

This whitepaper explains how exploding mobile threats challenge mobile device management (MDM) vendors, carriers, service providers, and app stores to ensure the safety of apps. Consumers and customers will hold these companies responsible for providing adequate security, and employees will expect enterprise IT departments to protect them from malicious mobile apps like they have come to expect for PC malware. The report describes how a cloud-based app reputation service protects against the risks of mobile applications in the wild: • Collects millions of applications from a variety of sources • Stores mobile app data in the world’s largest cloud-based threat database • Analyzes and scores apps on a range from malicious (e.g., known malware such as Trojans or root kits) to trustworth

This Webroot whitepaper compares deploying secure web gateways as software or appliances on-premises vs. as a cloud-based service. Lower cost, fast implementation, rapid scalability and less administration are all good reasons to adopt SaaS and cloud-based applications. In addition to these benefits, cloud-based secure web gateways can also provide better security and faster performance than appliances or local servers. It discusses a number of advantages of cloud-based solutions that appliances cannot match, such as: • Better defense against zero-day threats and spam servers • More comprehensive signature and URL database • Supports remote users more securely and without the cost of putting servers in every location

Enterprises have long been battling the inherent performance limitations of Wide Area Networks (WANs) when delivering applications to remote offices. Caching emerged in the 1990’s as a potential way of addressing this problem, accelerating the performance of specific applications, such as web services, while reducing overall WAN traffic. While caching achieved reasonable success for a few short years, the market for these point products ultimately subsided as a result of several operational and functional limitations. Enterprises require an application acceleration solution that spans all types of traffic, one that is easy to manage, and 100% data coherency when supporting business-critical applications. This white paper will address these issues and offer a solution that addresses these enterprise requirements. The result is a complete solution for improved application delivery across a distributed enterprise environment.

Successful mobile apps, especially enterprise mobile apps, typically need to interact with a well-architected set of back-end services, but most mobile app developers are more skilled at client-side front-end development. Enter mobile back-end-as-a-service (BaaS), a new set of hosted platforms that addresses the gap between front-end development proficiency and back-end infrastructure requirements. Enterprise-class back-end-as-a-service addresses scalability while providing an integration platform into existing enterprise services. Use this research as your guidebook to navigating the emerging BaaS landscape.

In a relatively short time, cloud computing, specifically Infrastructure-as a-Service, has shifted from a new but unproven approach to an accepted, even inevitable, model. Driven by flexibility and efficiency, the question facing most organizations is not whether the cloud is part of their infrastructure plans, but which applications and workloads to move to the cloud and when. But even as the benefits of cloud and hosted models have become apparent, concerns persist about security, and an assumption lingers that the cloud is inherently less secure than an enterprise data center environment.

GigaOm is seeing a new breed of services that promise to accelerate the mobilization of existing enterprise applications and business processes. Early mobile-application development solutions (MADP) were resource-intensive, requiring custom client code for each supported platform, as well as an on-premise middleware layer to connect mobile clients to enterprise backend systems. In this new model, code-free, configuration solutions - aimed at business analysts and lines of business- are revolutionizing the landscape, consolidating tools and services to simplify cross-platform enablement, and reducing time to deploy and cost tremendously. This report describes mobile-application configuration (MAC) tools, articulates their business value and suggests conditions under which they may be a good choice for an organization.

"Agile companies push new application versions to production every few weeks, sometimes even faster. With super-fast Beta cycles being the norm, getting various user groups, such as remote QA teams, access to staging environments can slow down your delivery timelines. What if you could enable secure access for any number of users in 15 minutes? BubblewrApp’s Service Access Service (SAS) is a turnkey, cloud-based service that acts as the first line of defense for your applications. BubblewrApp’s SAS enables its customers to grant easy access to applications deployed ""behind the firewall"" (on premise) or ""inside the Virtual Private Cloud"" (in a public cloud) from any remote location. Customers can begin leveraging SAS within minutes without requiring any changes to pre-existing network and security policies. The result is a vastly superior secure application access model that enables a zero CapEx, low OpEx model for secure application access, both on premise and in the public cloud."
