Software-defined architectures have transformed enterprises seeking to become application-centric, with many modern data centers now running a combination of cloud-native applications based on microservices architectures alongside traditional applications. With application owners seeking publiccloud- like simplicity and flexibility in their own data centers, IT teams are under pressure to deliver services and resolve application issues quickly, while simultaneously reducing provisioning time for new applications and lowering costs for application services.

Software-defined architectures have transformed enterprises to become more application-centric. With application owners seeking public-cloud-like simplicity and flexibility in their own data centers, IT teams are under pressure to reduce wait times to provision applications. Legacy load balancing solutions force network architects and administrators to purchase new hardware, manually configure virtual services, and inefficiently overprovision these appliances. Simultaneously, new infrastructure choices are also enabling IT teams to re-architect applications into autonomous microservices from monolithic or n-tier constructs. These transformations are forcing organizations to rethink load balancing strategies and application delivery controllers (ADCs) in their infrastructure.

Australian businesses have long been recognised as leaders in the adoption of cloud services and the migration of core infrastructure to cloud platforms. Yet as ambitious ‘cloud-first’ programs are executed, performance and complexity issues have led many organisations to embrace the middle ground – a hybrid IT solution combining public cloud and on-premises infrastructure. Fast-growing hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platforms are increasingly being recognised as an ideal enabler for this strategy, with a software-based design that combines robust computing infrastructure with a high degree of centralisation, integration, flexibility, and analytics-based monitoring and manageability. Read how companies such as Beam Suntory have redefined enterprise architecture and learn more about the way an integrated hyperconverged infrastructure can help you build the right infrastructure for the future.

Cisco has recently unveiled its new intent-based networking strategy, called "The Network. Intuitive." The goal of intent-based networking is to allow greater levels of automation, security integration, and centralized manageability within a software subscription orientation. Intent-based networking is underpinned by Software-Defined Access (SDA), Cisco's automation engine built upon the company's Digital Network Architecture (DNA), which automates network segmentation, policy enforcement, and troubleshooting. Other core components of the announcement include a refresh of Cisco Catalyst switches, a new licensing model for infrastructure, and an all-in-one management console called DNA Center.

No matter how advanced data centers may become, they remain in a perpetual state of change in order to meet the demands of virtualized environments. But with the advent of software-defined storage (SDS) architecture, capabilities associated with hyperconverged technologies (including compute, storage, and networking), help data centers meet virtualization requirements with less administrator intervention at webscale.

The advent of cloud computing and software-defined data center architectures for modern application delivery has made networking more sensitive than ever before. Applications in the digital age require networks that can expand and contract dynamically based on consumer demand. Enterprises are implementing software-defined networking (SDN) to deliver the automation required by these new environments, but the dynamic nature of SDN makes network management and monitoring fundamentally more challenging. Network infrastructure teams need monitoring tools that can provide visibility into these new and constantly changing networks. This white paper explores the importance of SDN monitoring and examines a leading example of a solution, CA Performance Management with CA Virtual Network Assurance integration.

This white paper examines the economics of deploying Red Hat's Storage Server. Based on GlusterFS, a distributed file system that Red Hat acquired as part of Gluster, Red Hat Storage Server is ushering in a new era of software-based storage (also known as software-defined storage by many suppliers) solutions. Such solutions leverage commodity x86-based hardware from server vendors and a distributed shared nothing architecture that allows businesses to build out a service-based storage infrastructure in an economically feasible manner.

The Wide Area Network (WAN) is in the midst of a significant evolution. Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) is the key factor driving this evolution and bringing along with it many transformational changes. SD-WAN has enabled several new WAN uses cases, such as enabling reliable, secure and high performance support of software-as-a-service (SaaS), cloud compute, cloud storage, cloud security and the ability to use non-deterministic Internet services to provide business-class transport. The traditional WAN architecture was ill equipped to support these new use cases. As is usually the case with an emerging market, the first entrants into the SD-WAN space were start-ups. However, given the ability of SD-WAN to support both traditional and emerging WAN use cases, the market has recently been flooded with a range of vendors, solutions and technologies offering varying types of SD-WAN solutions. While having differing types of solutions provided by numerous suppliers is potentially beneficial, it

Organizations have gained significant benefit from virtualizing servers and storage environments, and now face the daunting task of deploying new network architectures to keep pace. Software-defined networking holds significant promise to deliver a new network architecture that is abstracted and virtualized; however, organizations would be well served to learn from previous efforts to virtualize other domains in order to avoid making the same mistakes. Every ten to fifteen years, the types of workloads servers host swiftly shift. This happened with the first single-mission mainframes and today, as disruptive technologies appear in the form of big data, cloud, mobility and security. When such a shift occurs, legacy servers rapidly become obsolete, dragging down enterprise productivity and agility. Fortunately, each new server shift also brings its own suite of enabling technologies, which deliver new economies of scale and entire new computational approaches. In this interview, long-time IT technologist Mel Beckman talks to HP Server CTO for ISS Americas Tim Golden about his take on the latest server shift, innovative enabling technologies such as software-defined everything, and the benefit of a unified management architecture. Tim discusses key new compute technologies such as HP Moonshot, HP BladeSystem, HP OneView and HP Apollo, as well as the superiority of open standards over proprietary architectures for scalable, cost-effect
